Editing and Mentoring Services for Writers

Re:treat Retreat’s editing services are provided by published author Alison Taft (Ali Harper) – she introduces herself below:

Dr Alison Taft

I have been working with writers since 2011, as a creative writing tutor, mentor and editor. I have an MA in creative writing and a PhD in feminist crime fiction and currently lecture in creative writing and media at Leeds Trinity University. My first three novels were published under the name AJ Taft. In 2017 I moved publishers to HarperCollins and my next novel, The Disappeared, was published in 2018 under the name Ali Harper. The sequel to it, The Runaway, came out in November 2019. I am passionate about working with other writers. My favourite genres are crime, women’s fiction, contemporary and memoir.

Manuscript Read Through-Service – £200 This involves a full read through of your novel in order to provide feedback as to its strengths, weaknesses and marketability. Once I’ve had chance to read through your manuscript (usually within four weeks of receiving it), we meet (either by Zoom, telephone or in person if you can travel to Leeds) to discuss your work. These sessions are backed up with a minimum of a page of notes on your novel, highlighting areas that may need further consideration before you publish or submit to agents/publishers.

Submission Package Check – £90 If you’re thinking about submitting to agents and/or publishers and want me to have a look at the first three chapters, cover letter and synopsis to make sure they’re polished to the best standard. The price is discounted to £75 if you’ve already paid for mentoring hours or a full manuscript read through.

Mentoring – I work with a select few writers on a one to one basis and these hours can be used for brainstorming, plot development, feedback or tutoring on specific topics. We can meet in person or online. Writers start with a block of five hours (£200), after which individual hours can be added (£40 per hour)

Some of the writers I’ve worked with either through mentoring, tutoring or writers’ groups…
